CONSEQUENCES OF VEIN DISEASE

When it comes to vein disease, it is important to detect it early to prevent it from becoming worse.

  • A dull ache or feeling of heaviness
  • Leg cramps
  • Tingling or itching sensation
  • Pain from standing
  • Leg swelling
  • Changes in skin color and condition on legs and ankles
  • Ulcers on the skin

Varicose veins affect more than 30 million women and men in this country and they are often more than a cosmetic problem. Vein problems can be easy to ignore, especially in the early stages when there is little discomfort or change in appearance. However, when left untreated, abnormal varicose and spider veins can progress and multiply and lead to health problems.

Treatments for Spider Veins

Spider veins are veins typically located on the superficial surface of your skin. They can have a “squiggly” appearance that's red and sometimes purple. Spider veins can be caused by a deeper underlying problem that makes them appear or it can strictly be due to genetics of the individual's skin. When treating spider veins, if done correctly, patients should expect significant improvement of their appearance and also long lasting improvements. In general, there are two types of treatments.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a sclerosing solution into the spider vein. This solution causes vessel wall damage and causes the vein to disappear over time. In the hands of an experienced provider, sclerotherapy is considered the gold standard, or best treatment for spider veins. However, the difficulty of treating spider veins with sclerotherapy is individualized to the practitioner delivering the care. First, the provider must be knowledgeable in using the right concentration. Different vein sizes require different concentrations. Using the wrong concentration can lead to complications such as skin necrosis. Second, the provider must also be technically sound. Precise needle placement into the veins is necessary in order to deliver the medication appropriately. If technical skills are not present, medication will end up outside the vein instead of inside the vein causing the treatment to be less effective.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy works by applying energy into the blood inside the spider veins and causing it to heat from the inside. This causes vessel wall collapse. The pros of laser are that it can be used in areas where sclerotherapy may be more risky, such as the face or below the ankles where arteries and veins are very close to one another. The downside of laser therapy is that it does not penetrate deep enough to close any underlying veins that may be causing the spider veins to appear. At VIP centers of America, we have the Cutera Excel V laser, which is the most technologically advanced laser for spider vein treatment.

RF Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a safe, proven, outpatient procedure done with local anesthesia that takes less than an hour. RFA treats varicose veins and its symptoms as well as the underlying disease that causes them. It does this by closing off the veins with damaged valves. Blood flow is then automatically redirected to healthy veins with normal valves and your blood circulation is improved.

In RFA, our expert doctors use precision ultrasound guidance to insert a small catheter through a few millimeter incision into the damaged vein. Heat energy is then applied causing the walls of the veins to collapse. Blood flow is redirected to normal, healthy veins and normal circulation is restored. The treated vein is then gradually absorbed by your own body.

Endovenous Laser Ablation

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is a safe proven treatment for the closure of disease veins with damaged valves. It is an outpatient procedure done with only local anesthesia and takes less than an hour. In EVLT, a small optic fiber inserted in the diseased vein using ultrasound guidance and laser light is used to heat the damaged vein. Blood is redirected to normal, healthy veins and circulated is improved.
